We started the day with a visit to the magnificent Chateau de Chenonceau, situated on the Cher RIver about 11 miles from Amboise, near the village of Chenonceaux. We spent most of the morning touring the chateau, it's extensive gardens and farm. The chateau was initially constructed between 1514-1522.

Commemorating the chateau's roll as a military hospital during the Great War

Part of the chateau was used as a militay hospital during WW I

During World War I Gaston Menier, the chateau's owner at the time, set up the gallery to be used as a hospital ward During the Second War the château was bombed by the Germans in June 1940. It was also a means of escaping from the Nazi occupied zone on one side of the River Cher to the "free" zone on the opposite bank. Occupied by the Germans, the château was bombed by the Allies on 7 June 1944, when the chapel was hit and its windows destroyed.[
