Notre Dame played Boston College in Fenway Park this year, the latest installment of the Shamrock Series in which the ND football team plays a home game in a neutral venue. Friends and ND classmates came to Boston for the weekend from many points on the compass-Jim, Susan, Mike and Emma from Illinois, Gary from California, Bruce from Delaware, Bill from Indiana and Rick from Florida. The days before the game were action packed. On Thursday, Bill, Gary, Tom and Georgia joined for a delicious Italian dinner in Boston's North End. On Friday afternoon, Tom provided Gary and Bruce with a tour of Cohasset and Scituate, old historic coastal towns south of Boston. On Friday evening we gathered for a feast at Georgia's and Tom's house in Cohasset where were also joined by our good Cohasset friends Margie and Rich, a BC alum. On Saturday afternoon we all converged for a "tailgate" at Jillian's, an enormous sports bar very near Fenway Park. Months ago, Peter, Rich's former colleague from the Boston Globe, secured a private room at Jillian's which served as a perfect venue for pre-game festivities and it was only a five minute walk to Fenway Park. The old ball park and surrounding area were very nicely dressed up for the event. Since about thirty four thousand of of the thirty eight thousand seats were allocated to ND, the Back Bay and Fenway areas were thick with Notre Dame fans. The game proved to be more exciting and nail biting than ND fans had hoped it would be. The Irish played poorly and the BC defense was stout, but ND hung on for a 19-16 victory. All in all it was a memorable event and a great weekend--Boston and Fenway Park proved to be very special venues for the Shamrock Series.

Cohasset Harbor. Minot's Ledge Lighthouse in the distance
Minot's Ledge Light, officially Minots Ledge Light, is a lighthouse on Minots Ledge, one mile offshore of the towns of Cohasset and Scituate, Massachusetts, to the southeast of Boston Harbor. It is a part of the Town of Cohasset, in Norfolk County. The current lighthouse is the second on the site, the first having been washed away in a storm after only a few months of use.[

An exact scale replica of the top of Minot Light
The Chief Engineer of the Army Corps of Engineers, Joseph G. Totten, personally took charge of the project to design and construct a permanent lighthouse on Minots Ledge.Totten's design was as simple as it was effective. Totten, who had extensive experience building fortifications, had a full appreciation of permanency and strength of granite constructions. He designed the lighthouse so the first 40 feet of lighthouse would be a solid granite base weighing thousands of tons. To secure the lighthouse to the ledge he had several massive iron pins emplaced so that the lighthouse would be literally pinned to the ledge by its own weight. This idea necessitated working on the ledge on the fairly few times when the sea was calm and the ledge exposed at low tide.Work started on the current lighthouse in 1855, and it was completed and first lit on November 15, 1860, with a final cost of $300,000 that made it the most expensive light house that was ever constructed in the United States.
The keepers of the original Minot Light perished in a storm
In 1843, lighthouse inspector I. W. P. Lewis compiled a report on Minots Ledge, showing that over 40 vessels had been lost due to the ledge from 1832 to 1841, with serious loss of life and damage to property. The most dramatic incident was the sinking of a ship with ninety-nine Irish immigrants, who all drowned within sight of their new homeland. It was initially proposed to build a lighthouse similar to pioneering Eddystone Lighthouse. However Captain William H. Swift, put in charge of planning the tower, believed it impossible to build such a tower on the mostly submerged ledge. Instead he built an iron pile light, a spidery structure drilled into the rock. The first Minots Ledge Lighthouse was built between 1847 and 1850. One night in April 1851, the new lighthouse was struck by a major storm which caused damage throughout the Boston area. The following day only a few bent pilings were found on the rock. Two assistant keepers who were tending the lighthouse at the time perished.

Scituate Lighthouse, Scituate
Old Scituate Light also known simply as Scituate Light is a historic lighthouse located on Cedar Point in Scituate, Massachusetts. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 as Scituate Light

1810, May: The Federal Government appropriated $4,000 for a lighthouse to be built at the entrance of Scituate Harbor.1811, September 19: The lighthouse was completed two months ahead of schedule making it the 11th lighthouse in the United States.1814, September, the War of 1812: Rebecca and Abagail Bates "The Lighthouse Army of Two" warded off an attack by British soldiers by playing their fife and drum loudly. The British retreated since they thought the sound came from the Scituate Town Militia.

Lawson Tower is a historic tower built in the style of a European castle turret. It is located off First Parish Road in Scituate.Standing 153 feet tall with 123 steps to the top, the tower was built in 1902 by multimillionaire Boston businessman Thomas W. Lawson to cloak a 276,000-gallon water tank across from his "Dreamwold" estate.Lawson commissioned the Meneely Bell Foundry of West Troy, New York, to install ten bells at the top of the tower. These bells range in size from three hundred to three thousand pounds. This chime system was originally designed to be played either from the bell room eighty feet above the ground or on the console of the clavier room.
Lawson Tower
The Scituate Water Company stopped using the tank in 1988. The tower is listed as both an American Water Landmark and in the National Register of Historic Places. It has become a popular tourist site, featuring sweeping views of the South Shore, Old Scituate Light, Minot's Ledge Light and the nearby First Trinitarian Congregational Church.
