Georgia and I arrived in Bucharest from Boston on Swissair via Zurich and met our good friends Laurie and Paul at the Bucharest Radisson Hotel on a rainy afternoon. In the evening we enjoyed a great dinner of Romanian specialties at La Mama Restaurant, a 10 minute walk from our hotel, just past the Atheneum, the Romanian Capital's Philharmonic Hall. The next morning we boarded a bus with other Viking Cruise touristas for a trip to Transylvania, including a stop at Veles Palace, the summer home of one of Romania's four monarchs, King Carol I.

Peles Castle

By form and function, Peleş is a palace, but it is consistently called a castle. Its architectural style is a romantically inspired blend Neo-Renaissance and Gothic Revival similar to Schloss Neuschwanstein in Bavaria. A Saxon influence can be observed in the interior courtyard facades, which have allegorical hand-painted murals and ornate fachwerk similar to that seen in northern European alpine architecture. Interior decoration is mostly Baroque influenced, with heavy carved woods and exquisite fabrics
