From Gainesville, Georgia and I drove for about an hour west to Trenton, FL, a tiny little town in the Suwannee River Valley whose claim to fame is that it has a major quilting jamboree each spring and a very well provisioned quilt shop. This, of course is why we went there, to further Georgia's objective of visiting every quilt shop in the lower 48. We passed through a few small towns en route, including Newbury which had a few interesting buildings. This area is "Old Florida", with a true deep south feel, a slow pace and a look and feel that probably has not changed much over the last 50 years or longer. By the early evening we completed the four hour drive to our next destination, Pine Island, on the Gulf Coast near Fort Myers.
Newberry, Florida Town Hall
Newberry developed as a mining town after phosphate was discovered in the western part of Alachua County in 1889; and, the town was located along the route of the Savannah, Florida, and Western Railway, that in 1893 was extended southward from High Springs. A post office established in March 1894 was named Newton, but changed to Newberry in August of that year. In 1896 there were fourteen mines operating nearby, and the town had hotels, boarding houses and saloons to accommodate the area's transient and sometimes unruly population. The demand for phosphate ended abruptly in 1914 when war was declared against Germany, the principal customer for Newberry's phosphate. The community turned to agriculture and was particularly successful at producing watermelons. The Watermelon Festival, first held in 1946, continues to be an annual event. In 1987 Newberry's Historic District was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city is mentioned in Muddy Waters' song "Deep Down in Florida".

Georgia's destination
Trenton's first outdoor quilt festival in 2008 displayed several dozen quilts that were made by students at the Suwannee Valley Quilt Shoppe. Since that time, there have been five additional outdoor quilt festivals. 2014 will bring the seventh annual quilt festival on March 15, 2014, will showcase over thirty quilt groups and demonstrations from throughout Florida. These quilt groups will be displaying hundreds of quilts both inside and outside of Trenton's historic buildings. The Quilt Festival will also include quilting and craft demonstrations, old time crafts, antique dealers, good food and music plus a display of antique cars and tractors.
