On Sunday morning we left Pine Island and drove to Bonita Springs to visit Don and Gwen in their beautiful new Florida home. On the way, we stopped on the tiny island of Matlace, home to many colorful antique and curiosity shops. We had a great couple of days with Don and Gwenn, including a beautiful sunny afternoon at Bonita Beach where several varieties of birds patrolled the skies and surf, dolphins were visible just offshore and fishermen and jet ski enthusiasts enjoyed their pastimes.

Foggy early morning in St. James City, Pine Island. View from the back yard of our apartment.

The Waterfront-A nice seafood joint 50 paces from our apartment in St. James City.

By no stretch of the imagination is St. James City a "city". It is a collection of cottages, fishing bungalows and a few big homes on the south end of Pine Island.

The tiny and colorful islet of Matlache (pronounced "MAT-la-shay").

Matlacha (pronounced "MAT-la-shay") has a total population of 735. . The community's name comes from a Caloosa word meaning "water to the chin. Matlacha is one of five communities on Pine Island, although technically, it is located on a smaller island in Matlacha Pass, east of Pine Island. It is an "Old Florida" fishing village, home to many brightly colored art galleries, island boutiques, seafood restaurants, and traditional Floridian cottages.
