Over the last couple of days, film crews from Disney Studios have been in Cohasset filming segments of "The Finest Hours". Scenes were filmed on the Cohasset Common and, yesterday, near Black Rock Beach, a quarter of a mile from our house. The movie is about an actual Coast Guard rescue off Cape Cod in 1952 and so, at the filming locations, numerous 1940s and 1950s vehicles could be seen. Corby and I walked down to Black Rock to join a throng of curious onlookers as the filming proceeded. The shots in this album of these vintage cars were taken on Jerusalem Road and Forest Avenue near Black Rock Beach.
As noted, "The Finest Hours" is a true story of a 1952 U.S. Coast Guard rescue. In February of 1952, one of the worst storms to ever hit the East Coast struck New England, damaging two oil tankers off the coast of Cape Cod and literally ripping them in half. On a small lifeboat faced with frigid temperatures and 70-foot high waves, four members of the Coast Guard set out to rescue the more than 30 stranded sailors trapped aboard the rapidly-sinking vessel. "The Finest Hours" is the story of their heroic mission, which is still considered the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history. The movie's screenplay is based on a book of the same name authored by Michael Tougias and Casey Sherman. Scheduled for release in April 2016, the movie will star Ben Foster, Casey Affleck, Chris Pine, Eric Bana, Holliday Grainger.
