On the way to Sisters-Ben with Detroit Lake in the background
Detroit Lake is a reservoir impounded by the Detroit Dam on the North Santiam River 46 miles southeast of Salem, Oregon, United States. The lake is adjacent to Oregon Route 22 near the city of Detroit. This mesotrophic lake stores water for use by the city of Salem and other nearby communities
The damned Detriot Lake
Detroit Lake is situated over a historical road bed of the former Oregon Pacific Railroad. This route was built by Colonel T. Egenton Hogg as a proposed transcontinental railroad. Because of a lack of funding, the line terminated in Idanha, southeast of the lake. Idanha had rail service until the 1950s, when the track was removed for installation of the Detroit and Big Cliff reservoirs. Detroit Lake was created in 1953 after the completion of the dam. Part of the Willamette Valley Projects, the lake was intended primarily for flood control and power generation but has become one of the major recreation resources in western Oregon.
On the way to Sisters-Detroit Lake
The reservoir has a capacity of 455,000 acre feet of water when full and 281,600 acre feet in the summer when drawn down. Located in the North Santiam Canyon, the 9-mile long lake has shoreline of 32 miles when full. One swimming opportunity is at the Mongold Day-Use Area (an Oregon State Park). Detroit Lake is stocked by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife with 125,000 catchable rainbow trout along with fingerling rainbow, kokanee and chinook salmon. A self-sustaining population of brown bullhead catfish resides in the lake.
On the way to Sisters-Detroit Lake
Detroit Lake offers year round fishing as long as you fish in still water and not in or near the rivers and streams. It is one of 32 lakes federally designated for recreation, managed by the United States Forest Service. The lake serves many purposes including flood control, water conservation, and recreation. At low pool, it has a surface elevation of 1,450 feet; at the full pool season—typically May 1 to September 1—it can raise up to 119 feet to a water elevation of 1,569 feet. There are many camping and recreation opportunities at Detroit Lake. In 2009, a new winter boat ramp was constructed, making it possible to launch a boat safely during the winter months when other ramps are on dry ground.

On the way to Sisters-Mount Washington, Oregon
Mount Washington is a deeply eroded shield volcano in the Cascade Range of Oregon. The mountain dates to the Late Pleistocene. However, it does have a line of basaltic andesite spatter cones on its northeast flank which are approximately 1,330 years old according to carbon dating. The main peak is a volcanic plug that was heavily eroded by glaciers in the last ice age
On the way to Sisters-Mount Washington
Located 40 miles northwest of Bend, Oregon is picturesque Mt. Washington, a volcano in the Cascade Range that has erupted as recently as 1,330 years ago.Climbers that summit the mountain have spectacular views of nearby peaks including the Three Sisters and Mt. Jefferson. The last eruption on the mountain occurred 1,330 years ago. Sixteen miles of the Pacific Crest Trail pass near the mountain.
On the way to Sisters-Mount Washington
With a striking, sharply pointed peak reaching 7,794 feet, Mount Washington, Oregon is truly one of the most distinctive mountains in the Cascade Range. Classified as a shield volcano, the rugged slopes of Mount Washington have been deeply eroded by glaciers over time. It is located in the scenic Mt. Washington Wilderness area which covers over 52,000 acres of Central Oregon. Despite significant amounts of loose, crumbling rock on the mountain, many climbers summit it each year to experience the breathtaking views of nearby peaks.
Majestic Mount Washington.

Golf at Glaze Meadow Golf Course at Black Butte Ranch
From the Black Butte website: "For years, thousands of golfers have considered the Glaze Meadow course at Black Butte Ranch to be the most iconic course in Central Oregon. When the course reopened in 2012 after an extensive $3.75 million renovation by architect John Fought, golfers were treated to an experience unlike anything else in Central Oregon. Featuring slightly elevated greens, square tee boxes and deep grass-faced bunkers, the new Glaze meadow reflects the spirit of classic golf course design in a true mountain setting."

The Three Sisters are a complex volcano of three volcanic peaks of the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the Cascade Range in the U.S. state of Oregon. Each exceeding 10,000 feet in elevation, they are the third, fourth, and fifth highest peaks in the state of Oregon, and are located in the Three Sisters Wilderness, about 10 miles (16 km) south of the nearest town of Sisters. Diverse species of flora and fauna inhabit the area on and around the mountains, which is subject to frequent snowfall, occasional rain, and extreme temperature differences between seasons. The mountains, particularly South Sister, are popular for climbing and scrambling. Although they are often grouped together and seen as one unit, the three mountains evolved under differing geologic situations, and the petrologic composition of each mountain can vary significantly. Whereas North Sister is extinct and Middle Sister is inactive, South Sister last erupted about 2,000 years ago and still could erupt, threatening life within the region.

The morning after Sarah's and Tom's wedding, Father Paul celebrated Mass for the family in David's and Shelia's garden at their home in Durham. Afterwards, D and She served a scrumptious brunch, continuing their run of amazing hospitality. Just before noon, Georgia, Tom and Ben embarked for David's and Shelia's country house in Sisters, arriving in the early afternoon to enjoy lunch and brews at the Three Creeks Brew Pub. The next day, Emmie, Gregg, Hannah, David and Shelia joined us and on consecutive days we played golf, first at the Glaze Meadow GC at Black Butte Ranch and then at Aspen Lakes GC. On Wednesday, Georgia and I drove back to Portland via Mount Hood to catch our flight back to Boston, ending two spectacular weeks in Oregon.
